Hey all,

I really dig the Vepr 12 that I've had for a couple years, but the thing is a pike, and ideally I'd like to have it a bit handier to wield indoors, and take a bit less space to store/transport now that I'm getting more into shotgun stuff. All I've done with it thus far is slay paper with buckshot and slugs that all ran fine, when current conditions allow I'd like to take it to a couple 3gun matches a year, but I'm not terribly concerned about its functioning with featherweight birdshot.

So, if I wanted to have this thing cut down and pin a brake on instead to meet minimum 18" length but without getting into SBS territory, I wanted to know what all I'd be getting into. Given the wide array of muzzle options, it seems like this could entail as little as 2" of barrel removal, or as much as 5" or more in some cases it looks like. I do have one of the US made clones of the standard bird cage brake (bringing it effectively to 20" in length currently with the stock barrel), but I'm aware there's a gazillion devices and that they can work differently at different lengths.

What have people had success with, what issues have you run into, what muzzle devices worked best, what sort of gas system work was required, etc? Is this something I could take down to a local chop shop smith and just have them cut 3" off and pin the brake I have on without any issue or is this something that really should merit sending off to a specialist for serious work?

Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Welcome. You can probably chop it down to 13 " and pin a GK01( 5.25") making it 18.25 without having many problems with cycling most rounds. Alot of times when you go below 13" you are probably looking at more refinement somewhere. I have an IZ 433a ( Vepr 12s Izhmash cousin)that Evlutionz LLC in Florida chopped and permed for me that runs everything. It is 18.25 "with the GK01 brake permed on it. Look up the IZ 433a video on You Tube that Evl downloaded.

Very cool thanks, I checked out the video and it looks awesome. Might you know if there was any gas system work to be done on that length or was it a pretty simple chop and pin job?

On another note, any chokes that work with a setup like that? Not sure if I really have a use case for them currently, but figured I should ask just in case it comes up in the future.

I don't think Evl did any port work on mine, but he definitely refined the internals and put one sweet ass FCG in it. You could probably get some kind of chop and perm that takes internal chokes but I wouldn't recommend that. In that case just leave it full length and get some internal chokes if you don't want the gun any longer.

It definitely got gas work and full weapon refinement. It takes everything to make them run like that with that much barrel removed.

I didn't know that Evl. I always thought when you went below 13" of barrel it opened up that new dimension. The full weapon refinement is sweet, especially the FCG and it's reset. Boing

I am glad you are enjoying it. There is some love in it ;)
