I did a thorough cleaning of my vepr after shooting about 400ish rounds through it. I got to the gas block and after I took the puck out was inspecting inside and noticed that it looked like a ton of carbon buildup was near the rear. I took my angled pick and started going to work (not near the 5 gas ports but in the rear upper portion). Is their supposed to be about a 1/4'' ring near the rear of the block that is machined deeper than the rest of the block? After cleaning it up really well thats what I was left with. Sorry new to the platform and never have owned an ak before either and just wanted to be sure.

Yep. You're good. Keep shooting!

Be sure to uncake the gas ports and never ever use any lube or oil on the barrel, gas block, puck, gas tube, or op rod. Lube greatly speeds build up of debris. Personally, I use only a dry protectant. No oil. No grease.

If you must use oil on the trigger or something, full synthetic motor oil is cheap and high performance. ;)

Thank you! Luckily I read on here before ever putting cleaner or lube inside the gas block/tube or rod. I hand clean all those dry. I do use some clp when I clean up the rails, hammer, and bolt though. I bet synthetic motor oil would work even better for a lubricant.

I use some high temp grease on the rails, locking lugs, and the recoil spring assembly, and a bit of oil on the bolt tail, keeps wear down a bit.

cleaning the gas block is super easy remove, the puc, clean with hot soapy water dry. hit the gasblock with some pressurized air from a air compressor and run a 12 gauge cotton mop through the bore and you are done. i have been doing this for 4 years and it does the trick, also never ever lube the puc or the gas block, it needs to stay bone dry.

You can blow the gasports out with Gun Scrubber quickly. I use Frog Lube in my shotguns. It cuts down on build up without leaving an oily mess.Don't get Gun Scrubber on exterior finish.
