Long story short, I was racking my bolt a few times with an empty magazine in the rifle and everything seemed to be moving smoothly, but once I removed the magazine this little pin fell out of the mag well with it.

Is this part of the rifle? After checking around google for a while it kind of looks like an ak guide rod holder pin like this:

but I can't for the life of me find where it would go on the vepr.

It goes at the rear of your spring and rod. It holds your dust cover closed

There's a square hole in rear of dust cover. The corrugated part fits through the hole. The bottom of that piece fits into the notch in rear of receiver. You have to pin it back on to the rear of the rod and spring.

Sorry, to be clear that last picture was just one I pulled off the internet for a part that used a similar looking pin, my guide rod holder is still attached to the rod. I thought that was where the pin would go as well, but it doesn't appear to have any openings for a pin like in that picture.

This is mine:

I figured out what it was, the pin had fallen out of the cheap UTG bipod I have mounted as I was taking the mag out.
