I am wondering what size screw is it that holds the handguard on ?
I know the pitch is .5mm, but the threading must be odd . I pulled out my metric tap and die set and there is nothing remotely close to it .
Anyone know what the thread pattern on this is ?

As far as i know, not having a 223, all the vepr handguard retaining screws are m5x0.5 Not a common thread, though someone once told me that 10-32 might fit.

Did you lose a screw, or trying to do something else?

I did not loose a screw. I did change my furniture to a set of the old Robinson Armament Black plastic set and the screw is too long to use with this furniture.
I was looking for either a screw or a die, so I could thread a screw the proper length to work with the RA stock set.
I will try the 10-32. It does appear to be a close match to the #10 screw size, the taps and dies in my metric set have a very small screw for the .5mm thread pitch, like a 3mm.
I figured it was an odd one.

if you dont plan on swapping the furniture back anytime soon, you may want to save yourself some trouble and just cut the screw down.

I would like to do that , but it is not fully threaded. It appears to be an odd thread pattern for the size of the screw. A die would be nice ,then I could thread a blank screw or better yet a sling stud .
I may retap it to 10-32.

I know 10-32 sling swivel studs fit on my Saiga's handguard retainer. And that's more than likely the same size as your Vepr. I'd just go to a hardware store with your screw, and see if you can find a nut in a pitch that fits it, and then look for a screw that fits that nut that's the size you want.

That's what I did with the Saiga screw.

I have 10-32 screws and it is not a 10-32. I broke out the thread pitch gauge from my metric tap and die set and it is definitely a 5mm X 0.5mm as ReverandFranz suggested.
Not a common size at all.

Manticore Arms doesn't appear to list the screws on their website anymore.
