How many rounds is a 5.45 vepr good for?

I have tucked away around 40k when it was dirt cheap. I'm wondering if it would be good to have a spare barrel.

With all that ammo you have , maybe you can be the V74 pioneer and let us know. Ha ha. You should probably pick up some more 74s to feed all that to. Not many shooters will evet put 5k through any one rifle with today's ammo prices.

with a chrome lined barrel it will be fairly long but I'd guess at least 3 or 4 barrels of you want any kind of accuracy. still though that's quite good I shot out my 300wsm in about 1300 rounds and I'm now waiting for a new barrel

I figured I would get around 10k for barrel life.

I have 2 AR-15s set up for 5.45 too. Its how I got into the caliber originally. I have 2 or 3 barrels sitting around for each of those.

I spotted a vepr barrel on gunbroker. But he wants around 300. And I would have to pay someone to swap it out. I've never messed with assembling an AKM type rifle.

I could probably pick up a saiga for a couple hundred more if I watched for it.

You would be suprised. I think you would get at least 30-40k rounds out of an OEM barrel in 545. If you over stress any barrel you will shorten it's life immensely. Full auto will definitely shorten the life of a barrel. The V74 is a semi auto with chrome lined RPK barrel which is really designed for MGs to maintain accuracy and displace the heat quicker. Double tapping bad guys in a SHTF scenario should give that barrel a very very long life.
