Greeting comrades,

I've got my first AK/Vepr en route and I'm curious what my options are for the side-mount rail for an optic? I know there's a few cool Russian ones that have the rubberized eye piece but otherwise I'm workin' off a clean slate. Learn me will ya!

Legion carries the Zentico line if you want to stay Russian. Midwest Industries makes a real nice low proile QD mount if you want to add some stars and stripes to your rifle. Take your time and look at all your options and prices. I have a Zentico one on an AK74 and have 3 MI QDs. All work fine.

Thanks CM, those are just mounts but what about glass? I've seen the orb-old dive helmet style hard metal green job before that was outstanding but I'm sure a pretty penny and as plentiful as the white buffalo...

It all depends on your application I guess. You dont have to spend alot of money on a scope for an AK in my opinion. I've never blown up anything on a 74. I've seen guys put Leupold scopes on Aks?...whatever floats your boat I guess. On my M90 in .223 I've used a cheap Tasco Pronghorn tgat I picked up in a trade. Clear glass and holds zero every time I put it on rifle. If you are gonna train with it and jump out of helicopters I would spend more money. Lol. Maybe a descent tactical scope thats not to heavy and fairly priced. If you want extremely light but durable optics you will probably have to spend much more money. A descent red dot like the Bushnell TR25 on QD is an inexpensive, light way for good accuracy and double tapping your target. Take your time and read lots of reviews. There's nothing better than Irons if you have a descent set of eyeballs.

I need glass for sure though and will look around and read up for sure. Scope a classifieds here first if there is one.

Thanks Rakoczy.

Ended up picking up some used POSPs, a 4X and an 8X, but it's a top-piccatiny mount. Any particular side to top rail work?

My plan is to use the standard setup of the 4X on my Saiga-Izzy 47, and the 8X on the Vepr 74.

1p78 Kashtan and PO 3.5x21p are both optics designed specifically for the 5,45 caliber
